Liverpool is one of the UK’s most exciting cities. Here are just some of the great activities worth doing while in Liverpool.
Explore Liverpool Cathedral
Liverpool sports the largest cathedral in the UK. In fact, it’s one of the largest in the world. It took 75 years to build and is a feat of engineering – even if you’re not religious, it’s certain to leave you in awe. Entry to the cathedral is free, although you do have to pay to climb the tower (which is worth the views).
Learn all about The Beatles
The Beatles were formed in Liverpool and there are many attractions across the city dedicated to this iconic band. The Beatles Story is a popular exhibition that guides visitors through the life of the members and the journey that they took as a band. You may also want to visit the Cavern Club – the venue in which the band first played. Avid Beatles fans can even visit the childhood homes of Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
Visit the museums
There are some fascinating museums in Liverpool that are also worth visiting. Liverpool’s World Museum is dedicated to science and contains a planetarium and aquarium. Merseyside Maritime Museum meanwhile delves into the city’s history of shipbuilding, nautical trade and naval history. There’s also the International Slavery Museum for a look into the history of slavery.
Take a walk around Albert Dock
Albert Dock is one of the most scenic parts of Liverpool – some of the previously mentioned attractions can be found here. Even if you don’t go in any of the museums or galleries, it’s worth visiting for the buzz. Various events and pop-up attractions are held here throughout the year. It’s also a great place to grab a drink or a bite to eat.
Explore some of the neighbouring towns
Liverpool has a number of other towns and cities on its doorstep. Warrington is a historical town not far away with a lot of character and a few attractions of its own including Walton Hall and Gulliver’s World theme park. It’s a great place for eating out in the evening – there are plenty of taxi firms in Warrington that you can use to get there and back. There’s also Chester, which has it’s own cathedral and the excavated ruins of a roman amphitheatre.
Take a ferry across the Mersey
A trip to Liverpool isn’t complete without taking a ‘ferry across the Mersey’ (as made famous by the Gerry and The Pacemakers song). This fifty minute cruise from Pier Head is great for those wanting to take in the sights. You can buy ferry tickets online.
